Power and Infrastructure

Bell Dewar has been especially active in matters involving the power and infrastructure sectors. The firm is experienced in acting on behalf of all relevant parties, including transactions aimed at the financing, supply and trade and construction of power plants. The financial services practice group, together with our energy industry practice group, is one of the most experienced limited recourse finance groups of any South African law firm and has an exceptional track record in innovative domestic and multi-jurisdictional deals. The group is ideally suited to tackling the complexities inherent in all financing transactions.

The power team has recently advised the lenders to a bidding consortium in relation to the construction of open cycle gas turbine peaking power generation plants in the Independent Power Peaking Project; the lenders regarding the refinancing and restructuring of the borrower's debt in respect of the Kelvin Power Plant Project and the lenders to the Mozambique Transmission Company SARL relating to the provision of an additional guarantee facility and the implementation of a new security structure in respect of the debt of Motraco, a company incorporated in Mozambique and involved in the supply, transmission and wheeling of electricity in Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland.

The group is also advising the turbine and boiler suppliers on Projects Alpha and Bravo (base-load power stations) in South Africa; the supplier to the turbine refurbishment and replacement hydro-electric project at the Gariep Dam and a bidding consortium in relation to the construction of nuclear power stations in South Africa.
