Careers

Career opportunities

Boldly individual yet a willing team player

Perfect balance in a career is achieved through individual growth and expression, within the framework of a dynamic team. At Bell Dewar we regard personal objectives as highly as collective goals.

We foster the development of specialised skills and interests supported by close interaction with like-minded colleagues.

Candidate Attorneys

A transfer of skills is encouraged by involving you, as a candidate attorney, in projects as part of a bigger team - exposing you to the skills of others. You will be actively encouraged to join in and engage with voluntary committees and key elements in civil society. This interaction gives you access and exposure to the changing political and social landscapes. It assists you when advising clients and shapes your thinking on matters beyond just the legal sphere.

Bell Dewar does not employ more candidate attorneys than it can accommodate as associates, after the completion of articles. This means that there will always be a place at the firm for those of its candidate attorneys who, during articles, have displayed the necessary skills to become future directors of the firm.

Applications for Candidate Attorneys must reach us by no later than 31 March.

Vacation Programmes

Bell Dewar runs two vacation programmes. As a vacation student you will be exposed to the realities of legal practice. Wherever possible, you will accompany attorneys to consultations with both clients and counsel and be given research briefs pertinent to live cases.  There will also be outings and some fun social activities, as well as opportunities to meet the staff of Bell Dewar during informal functions. Numbers are limited, thus ensuring that each student receives sufficient guidance and allowing for a thorough assessment of each student's potential. The firm has selected many of its candidate attorneys from the groups of vacation students.

Applications for the June programme must be received by end April. Applications for the December programme must be received by the end October.

All applicants must submit a detailed CV with a letter motivating their application, certified copies of their matric certificate and university results, together with a letter of reference.

Applications may be faxed, posted or e-mailed to:
